Finding A College

Choosing a college is a big decision. The key is to remember that there's no "perfect" school - you'll find many colleges and universities that match what you are looking for. Explore your interests and take the time to find the college that's right for you. There are many things to consider in choosing a school such as:

Location: Do you want to be close to home or far away?
Benefits to being close to home:

  • Able to go home more often
  • Tuition may be less expensive
Benefits to moving further away:

  • Get to be more independent from family
  • Get involved from different cultures
Size of School: Do you prefer a small campus or a large campus?
Benefits of a smaller campus:

  • Classrooms have less students, more time with professor
  • Closer community - you meet and get more involved with other students
Benefits of a larger campus:

  • More activities and organizations to get involved in
  • A chance to meet even more new people
Cost: What can you afford?
Different types and sizes of colleges, mean different amounts of money to pay

  • Public colleges get funds from the government and may offer more opportunities to get financial aid.
  • Private colleges usually don't get funds from the government, which means you will have to get more loans to pay for higher tuition.
  • Larger colleges tend to have higher tuition and fees.
Major: What do you want to do with your life?
You should choose a college that has the major that you are interested in pursuing. This will keep you from having to transfer later.
Check the reputation of your major's department at potential schools. Some colleges have an awesome journalism or nursing department and an okay business department.

Different Types of Colleges to Consider:

Co-Ed: This is a college or university that has female students AND male students attending.
